I have started using Zach's ideas for 3D Hybrid Maps (from the main FMS website) and hope to have some pics in a few weeks. Till then, a question. Zach, in your FAQ about this you mention using "Four permanent markers". Do the markers come off easily enough so you can re-use the plexiglass or do you buy more each time? May seem a dumb question but the permanent markers we have here in Oz are very hard to get off plexiglass. Or are the rivers etc in dry-erase markers and the permanent markers for another use?

Hi, The trick, which I learned in the military, is to use a dry erase marker to erase the permanent marker. Something in the dry erase marker ink will cut right through permanent marker instantaneously. Then you just wipe both off with a paper towel. That said, you want to use a permanent marker for the map, because dry erase itself comes off a bit too easily during game play.
I'll be looking forward to seeing your terrain!

I think you should print out multiple copies of the map , cut the hills out and paste to card for each level of hill , that would look really cool

That is a good look too. I have seen a few dedicated hex-and-marker guys doing that. It take some time and care though.

Howdy! Also keep in mind a great alternative to dry erase is Liquid Chalk Markers. Same ease of use but once dry after a few moments it will take a wet towel to get it off. Use it to write on plexi and window glass. This seems to be a good fit for it as well.

Maybe i have overlooked something, but how are the tree parts/flock fixed, if anyway?

It's all loose. It makes it more versatile and portable. It could be easily glued down if needed.

Ok, some additonal ideas, which i will try.
Based on the silicone rivers/roads from the Altar of Freedom Webseite
i will try to display the roads and rivers on the plexiglas with this way.
Additional i will also create stripes with flock/foliage as forest lines. So i fixed the flock direct into the "wet" silicon, and after it is dry, i should have flexible stripes with flocks, which i can place around the wooden areas (if it works as i thought).
The small brown stripe becomes a "road" strip. Same i will do then with blue colored silicon as "river" stripes. If it looks better then as with simple lines of permanent markers, i dont know. If not, i can still do the way with permanent markers
If you want, you can add additonal "pipe cleaner / chenille" conifers.

Neat!
I've seen this done before with roads and rivers, but not with forests like what you've got here. That's an excellent idea. A few years ago I did something similar by sticking foliage together with glue, then baking it in the over to dry it out (otherwise it took a week to dry because of the spongey nature of the foliage. This is a much faster way to get a similar effect. And having the base material already being the right color is a time saver.

Ok, first test stripe is dry and i am satisfied. The stripe is indeed flexible and yet still solid enough.
I noticed, it´s not neccessary to flat the silicon stripe first, use it as you spray it out of the tube (ca. 5-6mm), so the silicon stripe is still more solid a little bit. And you can spray stripes as long as possible, because you can cut it later easy, if it dry.

My first "Hybrid" villages for my Shevardino mat are ready.
This are the four parts of Shevardino.
But those can be used for other eras for sure (medieval to 19th century), not only for napoleonics, as you can see here in this example

Still adding the complete making of my exact map buildings.
So if you have a digital map template, as i use for Shevardino, load up this template into a simple "poster print" software, and setup there the real size of the map. Then choose the parts with the buildings, and print it.
Then cut out raw the buildings and fix it on a cardboard (i used a 1mm thick cardboard). After that you can cut out the building exact. You can now remove the paper layer or let it on the cardboard.
Then i added the fences border. I used for now small strips from a thin balsa wood slat. This adds also more stability to the cardboard base. But i will try next small etched railings, they should looks like more realistic like fences.
Then prime the cardboard bases and paint the fences. I added then parts of small fields. You may simple paint it, but i used small parts of modelmaking terrain mats.
In this scale, these give you the impression of 3D-fields.
But feel free, and create the terrain details as you want.
Then you can add trees. I used selfmade pipe cleaner conifers and deciduous trees (made of small screws and flock). At last you can place your houses, and finish the complete base with additional details like roads, hedges e.g.

You're putting me to shame! What is that map builder software again? That map is awesome. That said, my days of taping together a hundred pieces of paper to make a super map are long gone. I think my Wagram map did me in - putting that thing together took forever. Worth it. But your software looks much better, and easier, than what I did was. This is probably the way to go for hybrid maps. It also looks better.
I will be mailing my giant Wagram map to the East Coast of the US soon so that I can set it up at a convention in November. Should get some looks...
Also, I just switched jobs and changed cities, and I now have a lot more free time, so I'll be on here a lot more than I have been. You've been posting more than I have been for awhile! Anwyays, always great to see your stuff, very imaginative and always well executed.
