That was my reaction as well when I first got them . Some of the Epic figures have different shaped head/helmets but they are generally featureless.

I would suggest painting a base up and then they go from square blobs to a formation of infantry, and the mass effect is really good. And look at some of the painted examples here to see what can be achieved with a few well placed dots of paint.
