Starting from my favorite colonial film "Zulu" with Michael Caine
and the Zulu buildings from Suntzu (sadly i can´t find the direct link from Thingiverse again)
i started a small beside projekt. The gameboard is around 60x60cm.
And i did it again with the "Bruce Weigle" style.
I changed the files from Suntzu a little bit, to better match my requirements. - I scaled it up to the "epic" size - I used square bases (which is better for firelines - especially i going on to Isandlwhana) - I regrouped first of all the Zulus, so i can better paint the shields.
This adjustment is a good attempt/template for me, to use it also as medieval knights/troops, e.g. this first draft beside
In meantime the gamebord is ready with painting. Also the britisch and two Zulu regiments are ready. Still missing two Zulu regiments = 50 bases outstanding.
And further the gameboard need still some embellishment, e.g. bushes, trees, mainly the border of the dense bush/garden areas.
But for testing my simple game rules, it´s already enough.
First attack of the iNdluyengwe rgt. In the center back, on the terrace of the "Shiyane Hill", are three bases with rifle armed zulus.
And still a few of the
uThulwana rgt. with prince Dabulamanzi kaMpande. This regiment is a veteran regiment, and king Cetshwayo served also in his earlier years in this regiment.

Gameboard is ready. Also my "Zulu" rules are finished, now i need only still a few more games, to determine the final scenario rules and victory conditions.
View from north
And from other side from the hill "Shiyane". In the middle of the hill the terrace with the zulu shooters.
And a little bit closer The next step "Isandlwana" is already in preparation, this firstly not with a 3D-board,
the reason why, you can read soon

As i said, Isandlwana is following. Because of this, i noticed the great boardgame "Victoria Cross III" from Worthington Games.
Very simple and nice game rules, which could be adapated to tabletop rules for sure. The rules can be download here
The original gameboard has a size of 85x55cm, but still to small for my adaption with 2mm figure bases.
Because i need sections which are large enough, to contain up to 30 Zulu bases, i will get again a customized game mat in a size of 120x80cm. A first draft of the mat template.
In the following "printed" comparison you see the size difference.
The two "napoleonic" camps will be replaced with british colonial camps later too.

For complement. If someone would need a complete Isandlwana gamemat (instead of the gameboard adaption), such a cusomized mat could looks like this draft

Reworked the Zulus bases again and mixed the shield colors (regiments), i think, this looks better for Zulu hordes.
If i need for futurer scenarios regiments/units with special rules, i will find another way, to mark/represent those units.

The game mat is here, sadly the print has to much red tones, must check why.. And i need still around 50 british unit stripes for the complete setup and game, therefore i used here the smaller british units from Rorkes Drift.

All british units are painted now, so here the complete Isandlwana setup with 2mm figures.

Looking good! What figure ratio is this at? I’ve never seen a set-up of this battle in anything near the correct proportions. It really gives a lot of perspective (to me anyways) on how vulnerable the British positions were to an assault.

The map is also great- did you design that yourself?? You called it a draft above... I think it looks great as it is. If it really bothers you, you can always adjust it with a photo editor for posting online.

The british have around 1400 men (including native troops and cavalry) on board,
so the ratio is around 1:1,3
The Zulus may have 90 bases (limit) on board at one time, this is 4000 men. But every lost Zulu base may returned as new "reinforced" troops in every turn, so its hard to say, which ratio is it.
The design did Ivan Golyjenkov (Wargameprint) again.
But the print from Deepcutstudio has to much red tones from the original template (dont know what goes wrong this time).
As you can see here,i ordered two mats,
a smaller 120x80cm for my 2mm games
and a 180x120cm mat to use it with 1:72 miniatures. And the pictures shows the exact colors on the larger mat, but the red tones on the smaller one.

That does look better. I've messed around with using areas like these for non-historic wargames, where the players draw up the maps before the game. It's a but tricky to get it to work in that context.
