I have been a 2mm war gamer for over a decade using Irregular Miniatures castings for ECW games using rules I wrote specifically for 2mm figures using a 1:1 figure to men ratio along with a 1mm to the yard ground scale.
I have recently become interested in the Altar of Freedom ACW rules and they seem like a great set of rules for 2mm gaming. I haven’t bought the rights to use the FMS library yet but will be doing so after payday!
My other gaming choices are Ancients in 6mm using the DBx rules family and ADLG. I’m looking forward to seeing your FMS figures in action and especially the ACW buildings.

Hi Elenderil, Glad to see you here. I'm actually looking at doing an American Civil War battle myself next. Something fittingly epic. I spent the last few years working on a huge project of the Battle of Wagram and just completed it a few months ago. Now I'm looking at doing something new. Gettysburg at 1:1 scale is probably what's on the plate. The ACW buildings need to be fleshed out. I'm really guilty of over-promising this year. I have some barns and basic cabins in the Library, but I've been meaning to add a whole lot more and I haven't. I started a new career this year and I've been pretty busy, but I'm hoping to get back around to fleshing out the range. I've also recently been helping an old friend of mine finish up some rules that he's been working on for the last few years. Anyways, I'll be looking forward to seeing how your ACW stuff comes out. We may end up working on it in tandem. There are a few ways that you can take advantage of the range to do the ACW. One thing you'll see when you get in the Library is that there are several styles of infantry blocks. Some are more impressionistic than others, some are slightly larger than others (2.5mm), some are free standing, and some are actually scale model replicas of companies with every single officer, ranker, and NCO represented (for now only Napoleonics are represented in this fashion, but the ACW could be added quickly... and for that matter the Brits might already suffice, but I'd need to research that). The scale model units come with bases for musicians, drummers, engineers, and different levels of command. These models are labeled "deployed" in their name tag in the Library.
Not only are there different styles, but there are different base sizes. Bases come in 20mm, 30mm, 40mm, and 60mm sizes. The scale model companies are measured in the number of figures, and they have odd base-widths because of that - but there are several sizes for each company formation (each nation in the Napoleonic era was slightly different, which the models reflect). In the ACW regiments were the basic maneuver element, and they could vary greatly in size. You might assign an in-game description (small, medium, larger, extra large) to specific base widths, then plan your print jobs accordingly.
Finally, the infantry come with no flags, one flag, or two flags per base. I used to prefer no flags, and then would glue my flags down. But after having to do that for 400+ pieces for Wagram I think I'm converted over to painting the flags with some very simple, basic brush strokes.

So far I have scratch built blocks of infantry and cavalry which I will convert to FMS prints in due course. I share your pain with respect to the flags but printed flags give a better impression than any thing I could paint.
Buildings are more of an issue. Although the Altar of Freedom website has free paper models I can’t get them to look right. So I’m hoping that your buildings will fill that gap.

There are some generic buildings that should work (the cabins and 2-storied houses in particular. There are also a number of different ACW barns. The church is based on a German model but actually looks American I've been told (I guess it does, in retrospect). It'd definitely make a good Dunker Church-style stand-in. I do need to add some brick buildings and some more cabins (I think there might be some ACW cabins now, but not sure). I grew up in Pennsylvania and I've been to Gettysburg a lot, so I'm very familiar with the style of buildings. I also lived in the South, and so I'm familiar with the older buildings there as well. The things I'd really like to model are early industrial buildings, rail road infrastructure, and dockyards so that people could do Grant's campaign in the West. But once you get into that stuff it gets a bit complex. Well, I have a 9 day vacation coming up, so we'll see what happens.

I bought the library this morning, looking at the buildings I'd say some of the iconic buildings from particular battlefields would be useful. Thngs like the Lutherian Seminary at Gettysburg or the Twin Houses from Seven Pines some generic fortifications and field works would be useful too.

I agree! I'm actually working on some ACW rules at the moment and those buildings would be very useful. I know i need ot flesh out the ACW building range; the figures are all there, but the majority of buildings are distinctly Central European. Let's see what I can put together this month. I have a week of paid vacation coming up... BTW, if you're interested in checking out some fairly revolutionary ACW rules, I will have some ready to play test soon...

Always interested in new rules Zach An early rough draft detailing the basic game engine is posted in the forums, if you're interested. Lots more work needs to be done though.
