I will try next to paint a "field effect", as i did it with my ACW bases with flock/foliage. But i want to keep it this time as simple as possible, we will see.

A little work on in meanwhile.
Added the forests, or rather the forest borders a la Bruce Weigle.
Further defined the village areas and linked it with smaller streets/ways. Then i added fields. This time not with parts of different game mats as i did with my Champion Hill board, here now the simple way with paint. Not as beautiful as with airbrush, but i don´t have such tool.
Then two example pics, how do the villages. In foreground the fast way with single village group bases. I will use this way for the time being.
If i will ever use this game board as DEMO game on a CON, it can be, that i use the second way as you can see on right side next picture. Then i would use single buildings direct on gameboard. Those would be surely decorated in similar way as the group bases too with additional trees, hedges, fences e.g. I used as example here my middle european town houses, until i get some day enough single "eastern" style buildings.

I love those pontoon units. It's interesting to see the buildings on a base vs. buildings directly on the terrain. I normally prefer the buildings right on the terrain but here the based terrain has a sort of advantage - I find that when the buildings aren't as dense based buildings looked better. For instance you've got dirt and grass yards on the based units, which makes the whole look a bit more unified. The buildings right on the mat look unified, but less so; they look more like buildings on a prairie as opposed to buildings in Central Europe. Maybe you can just paint the walls brown to make them more "Eastern?"
We were talking about modular terrain on another threat about WW2, and I think that your modular village would work very well for something like that. Some interesting potential in that...

Single buildings have the advantage on 3D boards, if the village area is uneven/hilly.
And you are right, if i would use single buildings for russian villages, i would arrange it similar the "group" village bases (so my first example pic was not correct), including parts with fences, hedges. New example pic.
And eastern single buildings need for sure also another colors (more wooden) as the middle europian examples here
I have a new version of my "pontoon" diorama file, based on this picture
it looks like this now

Before i do another "break" for painting, a last test setup with all current finished units, to see, if all works as planned and where i need still adjustments.
Overview View from "Valuteva" to the pontoon crossing via Kolocha river at Fomkina village. The 5th french Division advance over Doronino village. From the russian side with the first painted russian units. Next step will finished in about 4-5 weeks

First test pic with the "Shevardino" redoubt.
Now i have still to paint the light cavalry of "Girardin", then (the fighting part of) Davout´s 1st Corps is ready.
Then i make a break here, because i ordered around 150 single stripes to setup and test my 2mm variant rules on my ACW "Champion Hill" board.

This project is still keep in mind, although i edged a few smaller projects since last year.
In meantime the infantry of both sides are ready. So i could already play/show the scenario and the "Morale Napoleon" rules.
I going on next weeks with the cavalry on both sides, then i am ready. Maybe i must reduce the size/number of regiments (battalion bases) yet, otherwise it become tight on the gameboard.

Just tooked notice of this new Blog post, which suits excellent to my Shevardino scenario
Excellent overview maps, if i had this source already last year, i had created my gameboard according to this templates
But for scenario-designer / gameboard tinkerer like me, also the other battles/maps on this site are a great source

Because of the excellent Blog from Jeff Berry, i did a new version of the "Shevardino Redoubt",
the scale would fit, if you would print the Shevardino map from Jeff in the right size (would be in around 4,25m x 3,70m)
The Redoubt template (around 100mm x 110mm)
and how it would fit into the map
The new Shevardino file uploaded into the LAB

Ok, another example, if i would use the map in correct scale. I added pics of Infantry for the "Morale Napoleon" rules, 60x30mm / 60x20mm size.
You can see, this would be the real size to use indeed full regiments with the right number of battalions (e.g. 5 for the french) and you would have still enough space to move and change formations.

As i wrote, the excellent blog from Jeff Berry. You may have also a look to all other of his battle threads, including maps. He also sell maps (empty, with complete correct units setups e.g.) in Hi-Res to print.
I ordered just the Shevardino map template, and will let it print in correct scale size

Ok, during waiting of the printed gaming-mat, i did already a correct scaled digital setup (so i can see, where place the units at start), how the mat, including the units in correct scale, should looks like. As you can see, there should be enough room to move/maneuver the regiments/squadrons.
