Hi,
I am a German RPG and Wargame guy of many years. But now I am in my fourties and have a napoleonic itch latley, I want to scratch. So I dig into minis, systems and history.
Situation:
To keep things simple I try to wrap my head around a single battalion first, then around a brigade, for French and British. (I use battalion and brigade, even if it would be a regiment in other nations). Before recreating historical situations, I consider this like the drill and maneuvers ground for new officers..
So I know, the Redcoats would deploy in 10 company, each about 100 men on paper, more like 60 in reality, deployed in 2 ranks. That would leave me with 10 x "Cat 20mm, 2 Ranks, no flag".
Since a Battalion of 600 men had a frontage of about 200 meters, this translates really nicely into 1mm equals 1m (or the 2mm figure hight into a normal person). Big win so far, I seem to be on track for 1:1 ratio.
French would deploy into 6 platoons of 140 men, more likely 90-100 in the field, deployed in 3 ranks. That would give me 6 x "Cat 30mm, 3 Ranks, no flag" since there are 114 men on each base..
Maybe I could go down to 5 stands, coming closer to the overall personal strength of the battalion.
The nice thing is, I could line up the battalions in line, with each company next to each other. I could disperse the light company as skirmishers with another model in front. I could form a column with the battalions behind each other.
I could play out all the historical battalion maneuvers, even doing a square.
What I am missing:
- What about the battalion center, the position of the flag. I found the three rank on the 10x10mil base in the forum, but I'd like to have the same for my redcoats. Maybe I could the third rank out.. or have them as supernumerals..
- Real Marching Columns (i.e. 4 files, maybe I'll use the 4 Rank, no flag)
- The Attack Columns model seem odd to me, but I can't put my finger on it.
Other considerations:
- Do you guys go more abstract, letting a base represent a complete battalion? That would again give a ration like 1:10.
Cheers, Oliver
