Ive been printing mostly 2 and 3 rank Megacat unit ‘blocks’ (vs pips) with 20 and 30mm frontages. They get mounted on flocked stands either in a group to represent a Napoleonic brigade or singly to represent an AWI regiment.
The problem is … I am a horrible, inexperienced painter and the results are terrible. For example, I’m using acrylic paint and painting British units with a red acrylic stripe for tunics, a white stripe for pants and black dots for hats.
Am I using too many colors? Should I apply a black wash to highlight the individual definitions of a block? It almost seems I should just print with colored plastic, perhaps apply a light colored wash and call it a day.
I like the look of the existing blocks, and am not inclined to switch over to models using separated pips, at least not for now for AWI and Naps.
That said, have any of you found that certain styles of STLs and particular models are better suited to certain periods of warfare?
- Brits in 1880s khakis; Afghans; and Sudanese.
- Brits in 1879 red and white uniforms; and Zulus.
Greatly appreciate any help, advice or comments you can offer.

Could it be that the scale is too slightly hard for me? Can I take the STL files mentioned above, and have them printed slightly larger, to say 3 or 4mm tall versus the existing 2mm tall?
If so, what do I ask the people who print these for me at the library to specifically do?

Say I decide to do Colonials and Natives. Are there particular STL models by name and print size that you’d recommend?
Are there any special printing techniques, painting and basing schemes for doing:- Brits in 1880s khakis; Afghans; and Sudanese.
