Have any of you ever ordered a print run of a spiral bound book? I've been kicking around an idea for a wargame that would be played with blocks on maps. The maps could all come in a spiral bound book. When opened one side of the page would have the map, and the other side would have special rules and the campaign. The rules themselves would be in a separate book. Beyond being an interesting idea for wargaming, I was thinking it might make an interesting educational product, like you find in upscale toy stores...

Effin page ate my reply! Grrrr.
What I learned long ago from my game publisher was risk = reward. Designers don't risk much; publishers do.
Publishers seek to lower their risk and financial exposure. If you can do something yourself, then do it.
For an initial project, you might investigate self-publishing and marketing.
getting a color, eco tank printer and using cardstock rather than paper for a quality, upscale feel.
If the project doesn't sell much, you'll still have a nice printer and a spiral binder. If it does sell, then you'll have increased appeal to a publisher because you have a proven track record.

That's ingenious! I didn't even know they made home spiral binders. This is definitely the way I'd go for a first run. Great answer. This really changes my calculations around.

yeah I have used similar for printing books before but I also put a clear plastic sheet both front and back as well it helps to protect the book and also looks nice

Hi Zach , i have been spiral binding for years , i think i bought the cheapest possible binder at the time and i use a colour laser printer which is cheaper than inkjet in the long run my printer is a brother HL-4150CDN and is about 10 years old , i use generic toner which is about 50% cheaper than the branded toner which works fine
